When it came to choosing candidates for my 2018 book ‘Cool Scots', a collection of cartoon-style portraits and comical potted histories, I felt spoiled for choice. The Scots have a long and colourful history of being ridiculously awesome and narrowing it down to 42 was tough.

Inevitably there were glaring omissions - Billy Connolly comes to mind - and rather than produce a second volume I began making larger painted portraits. I use a combination of painting, screenprinting and collaged fragments of the subject's history to create colourful patchwork canvases. Look closely.
