Nicola White

My name is Nicola White and I paint at home in the Renfrewshire village of Howwood. I have a degree in design management and qualifications in graphic design and I have painted and created work throughout my life but much less so in the last ten years. It was during the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020 that I, like so many others, needed to find a creative release and that’s when I re-engaged with painting and I have a new love for it. My work is inspired by childhood memories of family holidays visiting my grandmother in Ireland and the rugged beauty of its coastline. Nature plays an enormous part in my work as I respond to my emotional connections to those memories and to that place. The sea, sky and natural landscape all feature through my use of colour and abstract, dynamic mark making. I mostly work in acrylics and mixed media, building layers and creating textures as the work develops and takes me in a new, sometimes, unexpected direction. My work is influenced by Monet, O’Keefe, Hopper, Kandinsky and Van Gogh.
