Statement
“beautiful, layered and thoughtful work” Jan Patience, The Sunday Post
“You know when you find something in your pocket that you picked up then forgot? Familiar but unknown, a wee treasure, your fingers feel around its surfaces, its edges. Not until you pull it out of your pocket and see it in your hand do you know what it is. My art has long been about exploring the shapes and edges of stuff, kind of like that.”
I make finely-worked and repeatedly layered oil paintings on linen panels or over instantfilm. In these latest works I combine cooking pots or bowls and shell-like forms, with thoughts about journeys across water, handed-down memories and landscape lines, rendered via oft-reworked paint surfaces.
A graduate of The University of Leeds (BA, 1990, MA 1991) I have been a painter for over 30 years. I moved permanently from London to Glasgow in 2017. Recent shows include WASPS x Kirkcudbright Galleries (2023), a bowl: a boat - my first solo show in Scotland (2023) at The Briggait, Glasgow and Finding the Wonder (2022) at Tatha Gallery. I was on the Council of the SSA and am a member of VAS and Scottish Contemporary Arts Network. My work is in private and corporate collections worldwide.
