Jane Whiting

Statement

From the age of 10, all the way back to the mid 1970’s in Dundee, I vividly remember my granny teaching me how to crochet. Fast forward to the present day in Paisley, where I’ve recently rediscovered the craft bringing my memories up to date and creating new crochet items by hand with a contemporary feel.

Working in a small to medium scale, I explore different approaches to crocheting. Sometimes I follow a pattern rigidly step-by-step, at other times I relax into freehand crocheting, intuitively making shapes without a guide.

My work stems from varied sources - from flowers in the garden, or easily shared patterns on the internet, to geometric shapes and tapestries. Resulting in a diverse mix of representational crocheted items, bright wearable garments, and abstract, decorative wall-hanging pieces.

Creating contemporary crocheted objects allows me to continue the lineage of craft and skill which has been passed down from my grandmother to me.
