Kayleigh Innes

My ceramic work stems from my adoration of things that are considered to be 'ugly-cute'. I have always been an admirer of the strange creatures that we live alongside, taking inspiration from natural beings that are often described as disgusting. My work has been compared to frogs, snails, rats and chihuahuas. 
There is just something adorable about black, beady little eyes. Something so charming about a silly, vacant expression. I want my artwork to warm viewers hearts. I want my pieces to be funny, a welcoming figure people desire to have on display in their home. I want the viewer to have the urge to pet the glossy heads of my sculptures. I think of my ceramics similar to a pet rock. 
I first found a love for ceramics in 2019 and have been creating my creatures since. These loveable, absurd sculptures have evolved throughout the years and continue to do so. I enjoy experimenting with different faces, body shapes and animal traits which explore the idea of 'ugly-cute.' My works share similar traits to most baby mammals - blobby, chunky bodies, large wide eyes and open mouths. For me, this furthers the desire to hold the creature, or perhaps, plant a kiss on the head.
