Statement

I am a Scottish artist, who utilises an increasingly multi-disciplinary practise, with emphasis on applying contemporary technologies, in conjunction with historical methodology. My work addresses the transitory nature of life, the disruption of biological structures and their derivatives.  This particular work is the result of consideration for a found object; a sheep skull washed up on a beach in Shetland. The skull had an almost flawless circular aperture at its rear, a perfect juxtaposition of natural form and mechanical marking. I subsequently discovered the puncture was the result of a “captive bolt”, used as a means of stunning before slaughter. These pictures are indicative of the environment the animal inhabited, prior to its slaughter. Focussing on the disruptions of natural structures by mechanical and man-made, I address the subject matter through my disquiet for photographic language. Questioning what constitutes a photographic work or action. Exploring the communication of these disruptions, actions and reactions through alternative methodology, I exercise an approach that doesn’t necessarily require a lens or camera, only the utilisation of quintessential photographic properties: Using modern scanning technology, light, time and the energies that affect photosensitive materials.  I am concerned with the amalgamation of materials and methodologies that have contextual bearing; referencing this, is a vital component of my practice and hopefully discloses cognisance with the viewer.
