Painted within a circular canvas to evoke a sewage drain. This painting is one of two created by me after researching the dreadful situation in India, where the Dalit's the lowest within the Cast system, are expected to clean out the ancient sewers and septic tanks without any protective equipment worn by them. All they have is a rope. They climb down into the sewer drains and have to go into the sewage water to clean out blockages. On average since 2017 a sewer worker has died from suffocating from the fumes in these sewers every 5 days. This practise has to stop, but so far nothing has really changed. As recent as April this year 2023, 3 workers died after inhaling the toxic fumes whilst trying to de-sludge a sewage draining system. The image on my painting is influenced through looking at the many articles and photographs of these workers' haunting eyes as they descend into the poisonous sewage drains with just a rope to help them.
