I used a classical realism technique for this humble sparrow. In painting this bird I discovered the detail and complexity in the feathers that I hadn't previously appreciated. I think the wildlife on our doorstep is incredibly beautiful and I wanted to celebrate this common species of bird. They fly so quickly that we don't get a chance to see the detail. I loved the contrast between the cool greys and warm browns of the plumage. By painting it on a black background I think it elevates the stature of the bird.
