I was camping in the Outer Hebrides last year and took a boat tour to the uninhabited Island of Mengulay. On the cliffs we got a great view of the puffins flying to and fro from their burrows. I was surprised by how small they were! It was fascinating to see them in their natural habitat. I wanted to capture the beauty of the puffin's head and beak. The colours in the head can be surprisingly complex. I used a small brush with lead white to get an impasto effect on the feathers.
