By describing feelings of mental disturbance through interacting with the paint on the canvas with my body, and highlighting the insecurities that can be borne from feelings of being pre-judged because of mental illness through words, Normal is Easy to Understand is a painting which addresses the viewer and their own depiction of mental health. The painting also aims to highlight the difficulty that so often accompanies being diagnosed with a mental illness, arguing that living with poor mental health is more uncomfortable than the feelings that may arise due to preconceptions of mental health that one who has not experienced it may have.
