This oil painting is done on a wooden board. The buildings are actually on the east coast of Fife although compositionally the image benefitted (I thought) from the addition of the headland in the distance. This is based on the Heads of Ayr which are of course on the west coast so the image has been drawn from Scotland’s east and west coasts! I’ve used the rising smoke from a few of the buildings as a device to provide a little depth, a focal point and to insert essentially vertical lines to compliment the preponderance of horizontal lines in the composition.
