This is a combination of acrylic and oil with the oil predominating and is another painting that was done initially years ago but which has been revisited, re-worked and re-worked again. The ominous pall of black smoke is an addition from this year and as I worked on this the idea formed in my head that perhaps we were witnessing from the shore the signs of some calamitous event, perhaps a sea battle, which from a distance of 30 odd miles at the shore revealed no more about what was happening in the deep waters other than the tower of blackness and the trailing cloud over the sky as the wind drew it away. There are shapes and colours in the bottom foreground that we cannot say definitively what they represent other than that they are the remnants or even just the memory of structures that once were there.
