I am currently hosting a Ukrainian refugee, Lena. This piece was inspired by something she said to me, that life is like a zebra - when you're in a dark patch, there's always a bright patch ahead. Instead of black and white I used the colours of the Ukrainian flag, which fits well with the theme, as blue is traditionally a colour of sadness and yellow of happiness. As well as the main stripes, there are little bits of yellow in the blue stripes, as life is more complex than just dark patches and light patches - even within a dark patch there are glimmers of hope. I made the piece using rubbish (much of it collected while litter picking in the local area), to symbolise that good things can still come out of something bad, just as Lena, with a strength that always amazes me, has made the best she can of the situation she is in due to this terrible war.
