Eleanor Jones

Statement

I studied drawing and painting at GSA, gaining BAHons in 1983, and an Elizabeth Greenfaulds Foundation Scolarship in 1986. I show my work regularly and have taken part in many group exhibitions in galleries around the UK,  mainly in Glasgow  Edinburgh and London.  My work was  in the finalists exhibition for the Logos Gallery National Art Competition in London in 1997 and 1998, and I was awarded first prize in the Angus College National Art Competition in 1998. My main subjects are portraiture and the human figure, often exploring  themes to do with memory, identity or our relationship to nature, and I enjoy experimenting with colour and shadow to create atmosphere and mood. Two of my submissions use the motif of thread in reference to the complex strands of family, history and memory which make us who we are, inspired by research into my own family's historical connections to handloom weaving, and the story of the Radical Scottish Uprising of 1820.
