Gayle Calderwood

I've had a 13 year break from exhibiting, life has been busy. I still played but wasn't concerned with taking anything to completion during this time. The last few years my drive to create more intentional work has returned, driven by the catharsis it brings me.
Completing work has encouraged me to try exhibiting again. The work I am entering for consideration for this exhibition are ceramics that have been cold finished in a range of painting mediums. 
Clay is a newer medium for me these past few years and I have developed quite the passion for it. It made sense to me to combine the new (clay) with the old (paint). Even though working in clay is more process heavy it seems more achievable to me somehow. Perhaps it's the smaller scale, I don't know. 
I work initially from sketchbooks. These are doodles created without much thought or intention but may be channelling an energy frustration, apathy, exhaustion…If a doodle resonates it may be developed into a sculpture or further drawing. It happens fairly intuitively. The women are not me but do represent an energy or emotion that is mine. They are imperfect but trying.
