The films from the 40s, saturday matinees, with the synchronised swimmers and dancers has lodged firmly in my head. As a child i loved the glamour and spectacle of it.
The swimmer has been a recurring motif in my work. The exposed vulnerability of partial public nudity. The bathing cap to protect hair and to provide anonymity by concealing a recognisable feature.
This figure is lethargic and middle aged and passively Observing.
