Sparrow Legs

Sparrow Legs, Ceramics
Sparrow Legs
The second piece of a quartet of abstract ceramics. The central focus are the middle legs, glazed ceramic and intended as very thin, wearing oversized felted shoes. The two other pairs of legs are hand felted wearing ceramic baby shoes. All three sets are mounted on pedestal created using ceramic hand formed columns, use of colour and texture to create an idea of grandeur. Wood is used to invoke a feeling of three children just sitting outside on a step. The ceramic baby shoes are used to depict childhood and fragility. The felt shoes are used to depict ill-fitting hand me down shoes and an element of preciousness, softness. The central legs are elevated higher to create the feeling of being put on a pedestal above the others. The flat legs were created using a hand built wire former and then using a dry felt technique. The leg colours are used to depart from the uniformity of the first piece and introduce the idea of three different people and the concept of the world not being simply black and white.
