I am a mixed media artist who creates artisanal books and ephemera in the style of vintage junk journals. I work primarily with paper and mixed media to produce junk journals, ephemera and other stationery and paper fold type items. I use inks, paints and largely vintage materials and found or junk objects. I especially love using vintage papers to produce work that is nostalgic, reminiscent and thought provoking. Stories enter into my work in a variety of ways and often provide a thread of story and mood throughout the pieces. I frequently find a phrase or word that prompts me; something that touches an emotional point within me and I work intuitively from there. In this way my work is largely autobiographical.
It’s all about the texture and touch of each item to carry the sensation, feel and emotion. The work explores hiding and revealing words and images; cloaking and exposing, creating places to hide and keep safe and finding surprises inside pages and nooks. The books are private, safe spaces to place personal and meaningful words, thoughts, objects and memories. Once I’ve completed a book I make a film of it, in silence, except for the sounds of the paper and the pages turning, the paper feel, tapping and crinkle sounds. I’m a creative writer and poet which enters into this work. I use a vintage typewriter and stamps to put words in the books and on pages of other pieces, from poems I’ve written or words that match with the mood of the page, a reflection of what is contained within. I use cut-up writing taken either from my own work or traditional story literature.
